Animal Emergency Supply Kit
- Identification
- Animals should have all identification (collars, harnesses or halters with tags; microchips, tattoos, brands). Identification should include owners and animals name, animal description, emergency contact phone number and address, home phone number and address and note special needs such as medical conditions. It would be a good idea to pack an extra collar with an identification tag.
- The transportation equipment and supplies should have the above contact information.
- A current photo of you with your animals/pets.
- Water and Food
- Enough water and food (ex: dry kibble, canned food, hay, grain, seed) for at least one week.
- Remember to include a can opener if feeding canned food.
- Food and water bowls, sippers etc should be spill-proof.
- Bring treats and toys.
- Keeping Animals Warm
- Include blankets, jackets or other covering to keep animals warm.
- Include animal bedding (ex: towels, straw, shavings).
- Heating devices such as heat lamps may be required for birds.
- Restraining Equipment
- Include restraints such as leashes, collars, halters, ropes, harnesses.
- Remember gloves for yourself.
- Some animals may need sedation for transport. Consult with your veterinarian in advance.
- Transport Equipment
- Take kennels, trailers, cages, etc.
- Practice loading into and out of transport devices prior to evacuation.
- Accustom animals to staying in transport devices for extended periods of time (at least a couple of hours).
- Bring a blanket or towel to cover cages or kennels to provide privacy and protect from cold and drafts.
- Medication
- A week's supply of any medication your animals need, with clear instructions in case someone else is caring for your animals.
- Clean-up Supplies
- One week's worth of supplies to clean up after your animals (ex: paper towels, scoops, disposal bags, disinfectant, cat litter, litter box).
- Instructions
- A current list of details about your animals' care in case someone else is caring for them including:
- Feeding and watering instructions including type, amount and frequency.
- Exercise schedule including duration, frequency and type of exercise.
- Underlying allergies or medical conditions.
- Medication, including the name and strength of medication; dose, method and frequency of administration.
- Indicate if your animals are friendly with other animals and/or people.
- Indicate if certain objects, noises or environments frighten your animal.
- Veterinarian Information
- A current copy of veterinarian records with contact information for your veterinarian.
- A copy of microchip/tattoo/brand information should be kept with veterinary records.
