The Legislative Assembly of Assiniboia, formed in March 1870 was Manitoba’s first democratically elected government and ratified the Manitoba Act in June of 1870, allowing Manitoba’s entry into confederation. Consisting of 28 elected members, the Assembly carefully maintained a balance between French and English members with an executive made up of an elected President, Louis Riel, and his appointed Cabinet. Most members of the Assembly were native to the Red River Settlement and three-quarters were Métis. In making the transition to representative democracy in a period of months, the Assembly, to this day, remains a unique political body in Canadian history. The image of Louis Riel’s sash symbolizes the leadership that he and members displayed in a period of great uncertainty. |
